Before you ask: This category being called "Daily Notes" means that notes can be daily (in contrast to other blogs, which have a "Weekly Notes" category), but if there's nothing interesting on that day, there won't be a post.

❤️‍🩹 Content Note: The following text mentions Jeffrey Epstein and pedophilia.

Today: Guild Wars Reforged — HOPE lost its venue — Gargron steps down — Android on Linux — trailers for Project Hail Mary and Wake Up Dead Man — the Billie Eilish wall in Berlin — John Oliver about "pedophile math"

  • In a surprising move, ArenaNet has announced Guild Wars Reforged, an update to / relaunch for a 20 year old MMO. It's not the first update to Guild Wars either; in fact, they're constantly releasing small updates. I really admire their dedication to patching a game that doesn't have a subscription fee and thus probably barely makes them any money. (Also, the update is free to existing users.) If you don't want to read the announcement, DeployableLover has made a good video about Reforged (9 min), which also includes some background information.
  • The HOPE conference has been banned from St. John's University, apparently because of an anti-police pamphlet brought to this year's HOPE by an attendee.
  • Cloudflare had a major global outage, only one month after AWS's big US-East-1 outage.
  • Eugen "Gargron" Rochko steps down as Mastodon gGmbH's CEO.
  • Waydroid is running Android on your Linux machine with Wayland. Haven't tried it; it runs as root and exposes a bunch of hardware to the container(s). Also, the Debian installation instructions are curl … | sudo bash, because of course they are.
  • After the first trailer four months ago, there's now a second trailer for Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It's based on Andy Weir's sci-fi novel of the same name, which I know nothing about, but apparently it has some fans. These fans are also saying that the trailers reveal too much.
  • Speaking of trailers, there's also one for Wake Up Dead Man, the third Benoit Blanc movie. Daniel Craig, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, … this is gonna be great fun again.
  • TIL: In February of 2019, Billie Eilish posted a photo on her Instagram, sitting on a staircase in Berlin. Fans decorated the whole staircase wall with notes, drawings, and messages. It's now known as the Billie Wall, located at the southeast end of the East Side Mall, in Tamara-Danz-Straße.
  • John Oliver has coined a new term; although I hope that we're not gonna need it that often.

If I'm understanding you here – and I'm definitely not – Epstein wasn't into 8-year-olds; he was just into very young teens who could pass for even younger, while also to passers-by still somehow managing to look legal. […] Look, I am clearly no stranger to sharing upsetting numbers with my audience, but please do kill me if I ever start doing pedophile math.
