Why not Framework Computer?
About these Why not…? pages
"Why not [X]?" is a collection of pages on my personal website that lists reasons why I'm explicitly not endorsing particular brands, projects, or people. Or, in other words, why I encourage everyone to stay away from them if possible.
These recommendations are my personal opinion, based on my values and moral compass.
Framework Computer, Inc. is a US-based PC manufacturer, currently (2026) led by founder Nirav Patel.
Disclaimer
I own a Framework Laptop 13, bought from my own money in December 2024, before the events described here. I wouldn't buy another one; not just because of the political implications, but also because it's simply not that great.

October 2025
Framework community forum user anarcat creates a thread titled Framework supporting far-right racists?, asking about Frameworks sponsoring open-source window manager Hyprland and promoting Linux "distribution" Omarchy, with Hyprland being described as a toxic1, anti-trans community, and Omarchy being run by far-right Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson. They've also given $24k to the Rails World conference.
In that thread, founder and CEO Nirav Patel responds with a post that boils down to these two sentences:
We deliberately create a big tent, because we want open source software to win. We don’t partner based on individuals’ or organizations’ beliefs, values, or political stances outside of their alignment with us on increasing the adoption of open source software.
People were, understandably so, outraged by this classic "but we're apolitical" stance, and made sure to inform Framework about their disappointment. Until it was finally locked in December due to "a disproportionate amount of moderation work", there had been over 2,500 replies.
They also received very negative feedback on the Fediverse, causing them to disappear from there for half a year2, while continuing to post on fascist-run social media (a.k.a. Twitter/X), including Nirav stating that he is, in fact, "pro-immigrant and pro-LGBTQ", which is nice to know but also wouldn't have been necessary if he hadn't cozied up to the fascists in the first place.
The moderators on the official Discord also went on strike.
