After a long hiatus I'm back and will try doing this blogging thing more regularly.

Today: European cloud providers – zero-latency "mega dropdown" UX – version control with blobs – open-source development in 2026 – Are you a Tech Bro?

  • crescentrose has a comparison of European cloud providers, asking the question "where can I get a fast, relatively cheap virtual server?" Based on this post, I've set up a VPS on Scaleway, and so far, it seems to work quite nicely – although the 0.43 € per month crescentrose mentions don't include instance storage or an IPv4 address, and the total price is more like 4.45 € if you need both.
  • Back in 2013, Ben Kamens wrote about "Amazon's mega dropdown" and how to build a menu that has a submenu expanding to the right without adding a delay when moving the mouse.
  • Lore is a new version control system by Epic Games that's "optimized for projects that combine code with large binary assets", the latter being an area Git famously struggles with.
  • Lake has written a rant about open-source software development in the "AI" age: help wanted
