Today: DigitalOcean funding fascists – status pages with Gatus – Captain Kirk in a suit and tie

  • After having pledged $3 million to far-right tech bro DHH's Omacom foundation, cloud service provider DigitalOcean apparently doesn't have $50 a month left to sponsor VMs for GNOME and Flathub. They're also no longer paying the editor of CSS-Tricks. I find this so pathetic that it made me start a new section on this website called Why not [X]?, where I'm "collecting brands, projects, and famous individuals that are incompatible with my personal values and moral compass to such a degree that I go out of my way to avoid them". And DigitalOcean is first on the list. They won't be the last.
  • Gatus (commercial-ish website, demo) is a Go-based open-source tool to monitor IT infrastructure and create status pages. It's easy to set up via YAML files and worth a look if you're into that sort of stuff, but I'm also somewhat afraid that it's gonna turn too commercial soon. Last time I checked it wasn't available as a managed service, and now that's all the website seems to be talking about.
  • Back in May, Engadget reported on Paramount+ using "AI" to make the ugliest Star Trek thumbnail ever, converting a close-up of William Shatner's face into a guy in a business suit.
